Mid-IB Summer Courses – Frequently Asked Questions
See the full picture
Students often struggle to see the full picture of a subject, but this is essential in order to score the higher marks in IB exams. Focusing on one subject at a time at the Lanterna Summer course allows students to make the necessary connections between different parts of the syllabus at a very quick pace.
Review a year’s worth of knowledge
It is often very difficult for students to set aside time for their studies in the Summer holidays. However, it is extremely important to be on top of your subjects so that you can face the challenges of coursework and tricky topics in the final year of the IB. Our courses give you the chance to combine studying and having fun, putting aside time to focus on weaker areas and to improve grades.
Learn to apply knowledge
Many students can understand and remember information they have studied in class, yet they still struggle to score points on IB questions. Learning how to break questions down and apply the knowledge you have is extremely important. At the Summer course, students have the chance to practice and hone these skills.
During their time at the courses, students spend 16 hours studying intensely, without distractions. The tutors explain the most difficult parts of the first year course in detail. They will also highlight the most important knowledge and skills needed to do well in the exams at the end of the IB. Staying motivated and achieving all of this on your own in the same amount of time is nearly impossible for most students.
Because of the small group sizes at the Lanterna courses each student can be individually helped with their specific problem areas. This means they can progress at a much faster rate than they would be able to achieve when studying on their own.
There are various staff members always available at the course centers. All students will also be given the Course Director’s phone number which they can use in case of emergency at any time of the day or night. There will always be a member of staff on each corridor and on site to supervise students.
Free activities such as sports, baking and talent shows are provided during the evenings and free time the students have outside of classes.
Students will stay on site for their entire time at the course.
3 meals will be provided for students at the summer course center. Snacks such as biscuits and fruit and tea, coffee and water will also be provided.
We recommend that you bring all the equipment you would normally bring to school (including your calculator), as well as the things you need when you spend time away from home. There will be a variety of sporting activities running at the courses; therefore, sports trainers, swim suits and sports gear will be useful!
Feel free to bring your own notes from school, however, you will be given a Lanterna course compendium and you will be taking a lot of new notes in class.
